چکیده
PURPOSE This study was a retrospective review of 11 limbs of 10 patients with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) treated surgically in a 20-yr period. METHODS The patients were aged 34.7 +/- 17.4 SEM yr. Arteriographic findings varied, showing medial deviation in two limbs, poststenotic dilatation in four limbs and occlusion of the popliteal artery in five limbs. In addition, computed tomographic (CT) scanning showed positive findings of PAES in all the limbs. RESULTS The surgical procedures consisted of musculotendonous section (MTS) with autogenous saphenous vein (ASV) graft in seven limbs, MTS and ASV patch angioplasty with or without thromboendarterectomy in three limbs, and MTS alone in one limb. All the ASV grafts were found to be patent during the postoperative follow-up period (10.9 +/- 4.0 yr). CONCLUSION CT scanning was demonstrated to be the most sensitive diagnostic modality for PAES, and MTS with or without ASV grafting method was considered to be the best surgical procedure for PAES.

Surgical Treatment for Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome, a Common Cause of a rare Clinical Entity: Report of One Case
Context: Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is a non-atherosclerotic cause of claudication and acute ischemia of the legs in young individuals. Objective: To report on a case of popliteal artery entrapment that was treated surgically. Case report: The patient was a 46-year-old hypertensive male diver who had been experiencing pain in his right leg for around six months, which worsened ...
متن کاملVascular claudication in a young patient: popliteal entrapment syndrome.
Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is an important, albeit infrequent, cause of severe disability among young adults and athletes with anomalous anatomic relationships of the musculotendinous structures surrounding the popliteal artery. We report a case where duplex ultrasonography and dynamic magnetic resonance arteriography was used to diagnose popliteal artery entrapment. We used a posteri...
متن کاملCase report and literature review of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome
Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is an uncommon condition resulting from an abnormal anatomic relationship between the popliteal artery and the surrounding musculature. The compression created by this variance in anatomy can lead to ischemia and vascular claudication. The diagnosis of PAES requires a thorough patient history and physical exam, a high index of suspicion, and dedicated...
متن کاملPopliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome Presenting with Acute Limb Ischaemia: A Case Report
Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is a relatively rare condition that occurs in young patients as a result of anomalous anatomic relationships between the popliteal artery and the surrounding musculotendinous structures. Patients usually lack atherogenic risk factors and most commonly present with intermittent claudication in the early stages. In the later stages of undiagnosed PAES, ...
متن کاملFunctional Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome: Poorly Understood and Frequently Missed? A Review of Clinical Features, Appropriate Investigations, and Treatment Options
Functional popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is an important and possibly underrecognized cause of exertional leg pain (ELP). As it is poorly understood, it is at risk of misdiagnosis and mismanagement. The features indicative of PAES are outlined, as it can share features with other causes of ELP. Investigating functional PAES is also fraught with potential problems and if it is perf...
